The word “motto” is a short expression of a guiding principle. To create a “motto”, one must first identify the guiding principle. There are as many reasons for becoming a police officer as there are police officers but there is only one guiding principle, “For the People”.

Police Officers are sworn to protect the life and property of the people. Officers are also sworn to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, not just for some but for all. This is the basic principle of the Constitution and so should it be for our police department.

“For the People”, these three short words, when combined in this order form a very powerful statement. This is the reason for our existence and necessity. Police officers should never forget that they serve the people. No one forced us into becoming police officers and even though we have the same rights as everyone else, we must remember that we are different for we are the defenders of what is right.

Taken from the text and meaning of the Constitution of the United States of America, the Willits Police Department has adopted the motto, “For the People” as its own to continually remind the officers and the people we serve that we are here, “For the People”.
